Mrs. Alexis – Tap/Jazz/Special Needs

Alexis grew up in northern Pennsylvania and began her dance career at the age of 2 with Hal Garvin.  Soon after, Alexis’ mother opened up her own studio when Alexis was 7, and she danced there from that point on.  At 16, Alexis began teaching jazz and tap classes at her mother’s studio.  Upon graduation from high school, she attended Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a psychology major and dance minor.  While at IUP, Alexis was a member of the Dance Theatre for all 4 years of college, and had the opportunity to work with multiple professional dance companies and collaborate with a brass quintet of IUP professors.

Dance has always been her passion, and she had always wanted use her love for dance to help people; Drexel University was the answer she had been searching for. Alexis then moved to Philadelphia and is a 2009 graduate from Drexel University with a Masters of Arts degree in Dance/Movement Therapy. Alexis is currently employed full-time as a dance & movement therapist in Fort Washington, Pennsylvania.

Alexis has been blessed with the opportunity to study with multiple prominent instructors throughout the United States. She also holds her national teaching certification in Tap, Jazz, and Ballet from Dance Masters of America, Teachers Training School, Inc.  She has taught hundreds of students of all ages across Pennsylvania, New York, and Maryland in tap, jazz, hip hop, and modern. Recently, Alexis’ choreography won for “Best Talent” at the 2012 Miss Caribbean US Pageant.  Alexis has been involved with the arts throughout her life, including dance, theater, playing instruments, and participating in various choirs. She continues her dance training by taking classes at Broadway Dance Center in New York City, Joy of Motion in Washington DC, and Koresh Dance Company in Philadelphia.

In 2013, Alexis and her husband welcomed their first child into the world, a beautiful baby girl named Mataya. We are all excited to have another member of the Freestyle Dance Academy family! Congrats Mrs. Alexis!
