COURSES AT FREESTYLE DANCE ACADEMY
Here at Freestyle Dance Academy, we offer a diverse selection of classes all with the goal of enriching, inspiring and educating our students. Dance classes at Freestyle Dance Academy provide commercial style dance classes (hip-hop, jazz, breaking or “breakdancing,” ballet, tap dance & more) to adults & children in the Warrington, Chalfont, Doylestown & Lansdale communities. FDA provides dancers with high-quality, industry dance education, and welcomes the recreational dancer, along with the aspiring professional. For those serious about a path in dance, we recommend at least two dance classes per week.
Hip-Hop – An urban style of dance that has grown out of the street/funk styles and become popular in the commercial dance world. Elements include commercial choreography, various fundamental hip-hop techniques (popping, locking, breaking, etc.), and freestyling. Freestyle Dance Academy offers different learning environments including boys and girls only classes.
Adv. Hip-Hop Technique – A class for older hip-hop dancers that focuses more on the individual styles that comprise hip-hop, as well as an increased emphasis on the technique of each style.
Breaking – Breaking or bboying/bgirling (also known as “breakdancing”) is an urban dance founded in funk music and rock dancing. Students are taught foundation and musicality while learning top-rock, floor work, freezes and power moves. Students learn how to control their bodies on their hands, feet, backs, knees and heads to create complex combinations of movement. Classes are separated based on experience. Breaking, commonly referred to as ‘Breakdancing’, is one style under the hip-hop umbrella. Freestyle Dance Academy offers Breaking exclusive dance classes.
Jazz – An energetic and exciting style of dance that is considered to be a foundation for dancers looking to study other styles of dance. Jazz is a blend of various techniques that focus on multiple disciplines including musicality, syncopated rhythms, isolations and more. Music can range from hip-hop to show tunes. A ballet background can help those looking to study jazz dance.
Ballet – Students will focus on learning the techniques of classical ballet, as well as the history behind them. Those older dancers who show enough skill will be offered the opportunity to go up on pointe. Pointe is a privileged opportunity and provided to dancers who show proper work ethic and skill to proceed. Permission for Pointe is determined by Ballet teacher evaluation. Pre-Ballet is a requirement for all ballerinas. Exceptions only made by teacher evaluation and permission.
Tap – An intriguing form of dance where music is created with one’s tap shoes. This style is seen in musical theatre and movies. Tap shoes required. Tap is a specialized art form, and can be extremely beneficial for performers to have in their repertoire while in the industry.
Dance Classes for Toddlers at Freestyle Dance Academy
Dance Combo for Toddlers – This class introduces our toddlers to the discipline and structure of dance. All styles of dance are introduced, such as hip-hop, ballet, tap & jazz, so that young dancers learn to open up to new styles of movement. At such a young age, it is important for them to explore their love of movement and music. Music, tumbling, dance & social skills are all part of this dance class, and provides the foundation for them to grow in all forms of dance.
Hip-Hop for Tots – This dance class is designed to introduce toddlers to the concepts of rhythm, musicality, and grooves found in hip-hop. Basic concepts from various hip-hop styles are incorporated, to prepare dancers for movement found later in more advanced dance classes. Dancers will also be introduced to other forms of dance, in order to capture their imagination, and broaden their idea of movement. Basic tumbling, strengthening, flexibility & other developmental activities are also incorporated into class to help our young dancers grow.
For The Adults
Adult Dance Classes at Freestyle Dance Academy are “drop-in” style classes, which are formatted around a pay-per-class structure. This allows adult dancers to fit classes into their busy schedules as needed, without having to stress about making dance class during any particular evening.
Hip – Hop – Adults at FDA have the opportunity to enjoy hip-hop dance in a fun, high energy atmosphere. Classes are for the beginner/intermediate skill levels. Different FDA Cast members teach throughout the year in order to expose our adults to various styles of hip-hop.
Tap – Made popular by the Nicholas Brothers, Gregory Hines, Fred Astaire and more, tap is an energetic and unique form of dance. Classes are for beginner and intermediate tappers alike. Students must come to class with their own shoes.
Breaking – This adult drop-in class is for dancers ages 16+. Breaking or bboying/bgirling (also known as “breakdancing”) is an urban dance founded in funk music and rock dancing. Students are taught foundation and musicality while learning top-rock, floor work, freezes and power moves. Students learn how to control their bodies on their hands, feet, backs, knees and heads to create complex combinations of movement. During drop-in classes, dancers may be separated by the instructor, in order to focus on specific concepts.
