The dancers of the Freestyle Dance Academy Company had the opportunity to thrill the residents of Doylestown, PA, who were getting into the Halloween spirit at Pumpkinfest 2016. Pumpkinfest, an annual event hosted by CB Cares Educational Foundation, brings together 20 of the best “pumpkin artists” in the Bucks County area, for a pumpkin carving throw down! Pumpkinfest is hosted at the historic Moravian Pottery & Tile Works factory, outside of downtown Doylestown. These local carvers spend six to eight hours creating extravagant works of art, which are then voted on by the community members. The local Central Bucks schools also contribute pumpkins to the event, usually keeping with a common themed decided on by the high schools.
Alongside the pumpkin carving spectacle, the community event includes everything you need to get into the Fall spirit. Hot apple cider, kettle corn, and carmel apples surround pumpkin viewers, along with plenty for the kids, including moon bounces & face painting. Pumpkinfest is rounded out with a day of live music & entertainment, including the Doylestown School of Rock, and the Doylestown Heat band. Freestyle Dance Academy was asked to join in the entertaining, and the FDA Company was all too happy to get spooky. The dancers performed two Halloween dance pieces: a hip-hop performance to Janet Jackson’s “Black Cat,” and a ‘Hocus Pocus’ themed jazz routine to “I Put A Spell On You,” featuring everyone’s favorite witches.
The dancers of Freestyle Dance Academy also entertained viewers with a shadow booth, which had shadows moving to all the Halloween classics, with a few appearances by everyone’s favorite spooky characters. The highlight of the evening, however, was the surprise “Thriller” performance, presented by the Freestyle Dance Academy Company. After the announcing of the pumpkin winners, Mr. Tony, dressed as a zombie, “kidnapped” the host of Pumpkinfest, as the rest of the ensemble crawled out from behind the Tile Works, and into the main performance area. In complete ghoulish attire, the FDA Company performed Michael Jackson’s famous “Thriller” choreography to finish off the evening. Inspired by FDA’s “Thriller” music video, which can be viewed here, the cast at CB Cares invited the dance studio to recreate it live, and it was a huge hit!
The FDA Company could not have asked for a more fun & exciting opening performance for the 2016/2017 dance season. Be sure to check out the Freestyle Dance Academy Facebook page, to see behind the scenes photos from Pumpkinfest 2016! Watch the FDA Company perform their live performance of “Thriller” below. Please pardon the poor lighting in the video. The “Thriller” Pumpkinfest performance was conceptualized for a live audience, and the viewing experience was not optimal for video.
Freestyle Dance Academy would like to express our gratitude to all the Central Bucks High School seniors who helped our zombies with makeup during Pumpkinfest! A huge ‘thank you’ goes out to CB Cares Educational Foundation, for having us as part of the festivities this season at Pumpkinfest 2016!
