This August, Freestyle Dance Academy had the privilege to perform on the opening evening of the inaugural Philadelphia Teen Fashion Week. In conjunction with Philly Small Business Fashion Week, and Philadelphia Fashion Week, Philly Teen Fashion Week enables young designers the chance to put their fashion work in front of industry professionals. PTFW also gives young models, hair stylists, make-up artists, and others who aspire to work in the industry, the opportunity to gain real-life experience on and behind the runway. Freestyle Dance Academy performed at the urban style & street wear fashion show, at Philly’s House of Music & Entertainment on South Street in Philadelphia, PA.
Freestyle Dance Academy dancers were joined by members of the Bronx Boys Rocking Crew to perform at Philly Teen Fashion Week.
The dancers of Freestyle Dance Academy treated the audience to a Matrix-type performance, in which the viewers were giving a taste of hip-hop through the ages. After a robotic intro by FDA studio director, Tony, Bella & Georell (of TBB) hit the runway to show off some 70’s & 80’s style rock dancing (the pre-courser to breaking) to James Brown’s “Give It Up or Turn It Loose,” all while rocking some old school threads. Eric, of the Bronx Boys, and Lauren then hit the floor to Kriss Kross’s 1992 hip-hop hit “Jump,” to show the evolution of floor work in the b-boy & b-girl community. After being entertained by a bit of old school flavor, Freestyle Dance Academy b-boy & breaking dance teacher, Andrew, brought the audience up to speed with some smooth floor work & tricks to Norman Doray’s “Street Sounds.” To finish off the journey through the decades, FDA hip-hop teacher, Ali, along with Julia, Lilli, Lauren & Bella, showed off some hip-hop choreography to Missy Elliott’s popular song, “Work It.”

A special ‘thank you’ goes out to our friends at Inspiring Teens Magazine, who were thoughtful enough to invite us to perform at Philly Teen Fashion Week. The funds from PTFW were proudly donated to The Curing Retinal Blindness Foundation, which works to help diagnosed children retain their eye sight. The fashion show lasted four days, and showed the work of some of Philadelphia’s rising fashion icons.
